Our team brings a wide range of experience to the table, and many of us are originally from the Fremantle and Perth region.

Together, our current pilots bring over 300 years of pilotage experience to the port, and we are committed to serving the Western Australian community.

To become a Fremantle Pilot, we must meet rigorous qualifications, including being Master Class 1 accredited Master Mariners, equivalent in sea-going qualifications to the ship’s master. We are also required to have at least 20 years of deep-sea and pilotage experience before even being considered for this role. This ensures that we have the highest level of qualifications and experience to support the Fremantle port effectively.

We maintain our high standards through continuous professional development (CPD) and ongoing training, which includes Bridge Resource Management (BRM), Advanced Marine Pilot Training, Ship Manned Model Training, and bi-annual simulator training covering emergency and contingency response, as well as specialized vessel and new berth familiarization.

All of us are proud members of the Australian Marine Pilots Institute (AMPI), and we adhere to Australia’s world-leading standards on pilotage. This allows us to exchange ideas with our peers in other major ports around the country, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of our profession and can deliver excellent service to our many and varied customers.

Marine Pilot

David Jones

David loves the privilege of handling so many varied vessels. He also enjoys interacting with ships captains and crews from different parts of the world.

David is a proud Freo local. He was born, raised and has lived in the beautiful city all his life. He comes from a long line of master mariners, including his father, who was a well-known marine pilot on the WA coast for many years.

Following a career at sea, he moved to the remote East Kimberley port of Wyndham with his wife and two young children as Harbour Master and Pilot. Two and a half years in the challenging, extreme tidal port, was an ideal grounding for a pilotage career. A stint in the, rather more family friendly port of Esperance followed, where he was exposed to pilotage of large Cape size bulk carriers.

The goal was always to return to his home port of Fremantle. And in 2006, he was fortunate to secure a position with Fremantle Pilots. After nearly two decades with this company, he still pinches himself that he was lucky enough to find his way back to Freo and pilot in this wonderfully varied and unique port. He knows his dad would be proud!

Outside of work, David's interests include, sailing, bike riding (both cycling and motor) and family. He also has, in recent years, completed arts degrees in History and Politics and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Notre Dame in Fremantle.

Marine Pilot

Matt Arnup

Matt loves being on the water every day and manoeuvring big ships in comparatively small spaces. He gets great job satisfaction after a successful, safe and efficient manoeuvre.

Matt was born and raised in Western Australia. He comes from a proud crayfishing family originally from Cervantes, where his passion for the ocean began. After finishing high school in Perth, he started his Cadetship in the oil and gas industry. After 11.5 years, he obtained his Master Mariners Unrestricted Licence. Not too long after, he began working as a marine pilot at the Useless Loop Salt Terminal, Shark Bay, Western Australia. This was a good port to begin his pilotage career as it is one of the few remaining ports that does not use tugs for berthing or unberthing. Utilising the anchor to manoeuvre the ship safely.

After working for 3 years as a marine pilot in Shark Bay, Matt was fortunate to be given an opportunity with Fremantle Pilots. Having a young family, it was perfect timing to bring them home.

During Matt's days off, he enjoys hanging with his wife and daughters, getting out for a fish, surfing when he can. He loves taking any opportunity to do a family trip along the WA coastline.

Stuart Proctor

The satisfaction of safely maneuvering the largest man made objects on the planet is what Stuart loves the most.

After a final round of redundancies, he decided to move ashore to Qatar to begin a piloting career which has covered 5 ports, 26 years and 7000 movements. During this time, he has piloted all types of vessels from fishing boats, super yachts, submarines, LNG/C, ULCC’s and the world's largest cruise ships. One of his more unusual pilotages was to berth a semi sub drill rig on Fort hill wharf in Darwin.

For Jeremy, the Port of Geraldton was a brilliant place to raise his young children and get familiar with the breeze. Greg embarked on his maritime journey as a BHP Deck Cadet in 1980. Graduating from the inaugural class of the Australian Maritime College, he served as a Deck Officer with BHP Shipping before venturing ashore to pursue further education at Canberra University.

Using his additional degree qualifications, Greg assumed the role of Chief Mate aboard the Sail Training Ship Leeuwin II, overseeing the onboard education and youth development program. At the age of 31 years, his career trajectory took him further afield and he secured his first command on board the Outward Bound’s largest Tall Ship "Ji Fung" based in Hong Kong. This experience included, navigating the complex waters of Southeast Asia and Japan, multiple daily berthings and manoeuvring the vessel in very narrow uncharted water ways in remote parts of the Philippines and Borneo. This is where he said he developed a deep passion for ship handling and the challenge of pilotage.

Returning to Fremantle many years later, Greg Tonnison took on the role of CEO of the Sail Training Ship Leeuwin II while periodically serving as Master aboard the vessel. In the early 2000’s, Greg transitioned to a career in piloting, beginning in Esperance, handling ‘Cape’ size vessels up to 300 meters in length. Ultimately, he returned to his home port of Fremantle and commenced a position with Fremantle Pilots. During his time at Fremantle Pilots, he has also served as Managing Director and on the Executive for a lengthy period. Greg's journey embodies a lifelong commitment to the sea, ship handling and the local Fremantle maritime industry. In his spare time, Greg is a keen, competitive sailor on Flying Fifteen dinghies.
