We’re excited to announce a special exhibition at the WA Maritime Museum that delves into the fascinating history of the Fremantle Port pilots. This exhibition is a must-see for anyone who has a love for our working port and a passion for maritime history.
As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of Fremantle Pilots since the service was privatized, it’s important to remember that the history of this critical maritime role stretches back much further. From the first pilot service in 1829 to the present day, marine pilots have played a vital role in ensuring the safe passage of ships into and out of Fremantle Port.
The exhibition, located in the Balustrade Gallery on the upper level of the Maritime Museum, offers a captivating photographic journey that highlights the essential work of marine pilots. Despite advancements in technology and the increasing size of vessels, the core responsibilities of pilots—guiding ships through port waters, navigating challenging conditions, and orchestrating complex maneuvers—have remained unchanged over the centuries.
This exhibition not only marks three decades of Fremantle Pilots’ dedicated service but also sheds light on the often misunderstood and underappreciated role of marine pilots. Many people are surprised to learn that pilots do not drive the tugs or lead the ships with pilot boats; instead, they board the vessels and take command of navigation, ensuring each ship reaches its berth safely.
We invite you to explore this rich history and gain a deeper appreciation for the crucial work of marine pilots in the Port of Fremantle. The exhibition runs from Saturday, 10 August, to Sunday, 27 October 2024. Admission is free with Museum entry.
