On Friday the 16th of August, Fremantle Pilots celebrated a special milestone—the 30th anniversary of taking on the custodianship of Fremantle Port’s pilotage services. The event brought together current and former members of the Fremantle Pilots team at the WA Maritime Museum for a reflection on the journey so far and to view a newly launched exhibition that celebrates their pivotal role in Western Australia’s maritime history.
The exhibition, hosted in the Balustrade Gallery, presents a captivating photographic showcase of Fremantle Pilots’ work and historical contributions to the safe navigation of vessels in and out of Fremantle Port. Attendees reminisced over three decades of service under private management, but also cast their minds back to the origins of pilotage in Fremantle, which dates as far back as 1829. Even as ships have grown larger and navigation tools more sophisticated, the vital role of pilots remains unchanged. Pilots continue to board incoming vessels, take command of navigation, and ensure their safe berthing in Fremantle’s bustling port—a critical task that keeps Western Australia connected with the world.
During the event, our guests were able to enjoy a private viewing of the exhibition that captured the skill and dedication of the marine pilots in Fremantle over the years. The celebration was also an opportunity to thank the Fremantle Pilots’ team for over 30 years of service and connect over the responsibility we now hold as custodians, for the safe and reliable pilotage of ships into the Fremantle Harbor.
The Exhibition runs until the end of October at the Maritime Museum. Exhibition Details:
